The use of satellite data, primarily from instruments aboard ESA’s Envisat, together with in situ sea measurements, provides a powerful tool for monitoring the environmental conditions of coastal waters and the health of southern oceans.
Ocean monitoring by satellite remote sensing to protect public health and the fishing industry started in southern Chile in 2002.
Last year, a major advance was achieved when Envisat data products were received in near-realtime, allowing early detection of marine conditions that favoured harmful algal blooms and the growth of dangerous bacteria.
